If any of you have been following the headlines of any major paper, you will not have escaped the news of the financial chaos in the markets today and in the past week. It has been stomach wrenching to see some of the old financial institutions collapse under this financial market turmoil. Reality bites hard when you see the big name New York buildings, synonymous with wealth and power, come crumbling down.
I cannot remember a time when financial markets have been so tumultuous. Every day for many months now, the never ending gloomy news in the papers has been weighing on my heart. We place so much hope on financial success and on things which can disappear in a flash. When I was graduating from school 8 years ago, I would never have believed people if they had told me that Merrill and Lehman Brothers would be in the position they are in today.
But I am called to trust in the Lord, and to have faith in the imperishable things that are found in the riches of heaven and not on the riches of this world. Human effort is short lived and futile. If you are struggling with anxiety and stress as many are right now about your job, wealth and security, turn your eyes to the true meaning of life. Seek after eternal life that is found in knowing God. Only God can give lasting peace to man. We were made to worship our creator. May this Psalm be of encouragement and comfort to you.
Psalm 34
8 Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.
9 Fear the LORD, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing.
10 The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.
