Last week, Eugene and I, together with several church friends, went to do some street evangelism, to share the goods news of Jesus with people who need the Lord. It was an eye-opening experience for most of us.
All of us have experienced brokeness in our lives. But I was struck by how frightening life can be if we do not have a hope in Jesus Christ, as it is only through Him that we can have eternal life. Through Christ, we have an eternal hope that will not disappoint. All who trust in Christ are assured of an eternity where there will be no more tears, death, sorrow, pain, loss, and hatred.
The few people we spoke to had common extremely bitter life experiences. My heart swells up with sadness to know that most of these youths grow up without a father; each of them has had a brush with death either via drugs, guns or suicide; most have had a close family member such as a brother or sister be killed. Staying alive each day is a struggle for them. Inside each of them, there also seems to be a struggle to get out of this vicious circle and to lead a normal life and have a normal job.
I wish I could put my arms around them and say, "Hey man, it will all be alright." But unfortunately, as long as we are live in a world that is filled with sin and brokeness, there can never be complete resolution. The only way out is for us to humbly turn to the Lord for forgiveness and acknowledge that we cannot save ourselves. We are selfish human beings who hurt people and reject God. We need Him to give us life. eternal life. Only He can give us strength for our current struggles and hope for a future far better than this one.
I pray that the Lord will be gracious to this community and that He will open people's eyes to know Him as Lord and Saviour.
