Frederick Douglass Historic Site - Cedar Hill, Anacostia, Washington DC

Frederick Douglass (1818 – 1895), a former slave who escaped to his freedom in 1838, spent his life fighting for the abolitian of slavery and the promotion of equal rights between blacks and whites, men and women. With a brilliant mind, he self taught himself to read and write, during a time when it was illegal for slaves to do so. Till today, he is deeply revered for his impact on American history and social change.

Note: All the appliances in his home are the original from the 1800s.
Coal fired stove
Washboard and clothes press

Water pump.. (a sign of wealth in his home)
