Claire and I have just returned after spending a wonderful week in Alaska. The trip was fantastic and we are thankful for how we were able to experience the greatness of God's creation up close. There are sampler pictures. Alaska feels quite different compared to most of the other parts of the US. A few things that really struck us:
1) The size and inaccessibility of this state: Its rare that you go to a place in the US that is so inaccessible by roads; most of the towns are accessed by boat or by planes. But that 's part of the charm of the place.
2) The beauty of the wilderness and the animals: It was so good being out there seeing the wildlife closeup and appreciating how beautiful they are. Takes your breath away!
3) People in Alaska appreciate good coffee and good seafood. Nowhere else in the US (except maybe Miami and Seattle) do you get Expresso drive thrus that serve real coffee (not the dilute brewed types). We had so much halibut and salmon that I think we are done with fish for a while. but it was good ... all wild and not farmed.
4) Alaskans are very friendly people who are passionate about preserving Alaska as it is; not allowing external pressures to cause the state to lose its charm.
5) The importance of a good tent when travelling: we camped for 2 nights in Denali National Park and it rained continuously! We were so thankful that our tent held out and kept us dry; but it was quite something.
It was wonderful going out there and we hope that you will get a chance to visit too!
